Hi John,
I spent another meaningful week at home marked by shifts On the Job, inspiring conversations about repairing our politics, and donuts and gratitude shared with the Minnetonka Police and Fire Departments. I'm back in Washington deliberating on our defense priorities, so read on for updates from last week:
Bridging the Divide
By now, you know that I'm committed to working across the aisle and repairing our broken politics. That’s why I created Common Ground Workshops, a series of moderated conversations between liberals and conservatives aimed at inspiring civility, decency, and collaboration in our community. The non-profit organization Braver Angels does similar work, and, last week, I was honored to speak at their national conference to discuss my efforts to promote a renewed sense of optimism and teamwork in Washington.
We can't legislate decency, but neighbors can come together to create more understanding communities. All of us can make a difference by simply initiating conversation with people who think, worship, or vote differently from us – and by demanding that elected officials lead by example. Interested in joining me in that pursuit? Click here to learn more about our Common Ground Workshops.
"On the Job" at Bridging
Last week, I had the opportunity to go On the Job at Bridging, an amazing organization in Bloomington with the mission of "Furnishing Homes with Hope" by providing household goods and furniture to families and individuals transitioning out of homelessness and poverty. Between moving furniture and loading delivery trucks, I learned more about their impactful services for families in our community and left inspired by the work their extraordinary volunteers do every day.

Moral Responsibility
I believe that we have a moral responsibility to address the humanitarian, safety, and security risks posed by displaced persons camps within Northeast Syria, and that doing so is in America's best interest. That's why I authored a letter urging Secretary Antony Blinken and UN Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield to champion the extension of cross-border operations to Syria.
On Tuesday, the United Nations Security Council voted on a resolution to renew permission for the UN to deliver humanitarian aid to northwest Syria. Although 13 of the 15 countries on the Council voted in favor, it was ultimately struck down by a no vote from Russia, one of the five permanent members with the power to veto any resolution. I am disappointed by the Council’s inability to reach an agreement, and it is my hope that something can be done to get life-sustaining support to those who urgently need it.
Calling Fall Interns!
As a former congressional intern myself, I know the life-long value these internships can provide. Active engagement from young people is integral to the future of our democracy, and I want to make sure Minnesota students have a seat at the table! Over the course of their service, interns in my office will gain a deeper understanding of the federal government and strengthen their communications, writing, problem-solving, and time-management skills. Applications are due July 15th, so if you know a college-age student who may be interested in interning in my Minnetonka or Washington, D.C. office, please encourage them to apply today. Please note that this is a highly competitive process with many more applicants than available positions – so don’t delay!
Keep the faith, and keep in touch,
Dean Phillips
Member of Congress
Bill of the Week
✔️ H.R. 468, Building America's Health Care Workforce Act
Nurses and other care providers are real-life heroes and play an integral role in our healthcare system. That's why I am a proud cosponsor of H.R. 468, Building America's Health Care Workforce Act. This bipartisan bill aims to strengthen our healthcare workforce in nursing homes by allowing temporary nurse aides to continue employment in this role and let them put on-the-job experience and training toward the 75-hour training requirement to become a CNA.
