Dear Friend,
Today is International Non-Binary People's Day! All around the world, non-binary and gender nonconforming people are at the forefront of the fight for LGBTQ equality and visibility.
One of them is our client Stephon, a refugee from Jamaica. They graciously agreed to sit down with me and answer some questions about their lived experience as a non-binary person.ββββ
Hereβs my conversation with Stephon:
What does being non-binary mean to you?
Being non-binary means not fitting in a box. It means being able to express oneself and identify with who I truly am, not having to live by the expectations of others.
How has your life changed since coming out as non-binary?
I am much more comfortable with myself and it has helped to strengthen the relationship I have with others, especially to clear the misconceptions that were initially there around my identity towards families and friends. It feels good knowing that my close friends and family are able to understand who I am and are able to relate.
What do you wish you knew before coming out as non-binary?
Nothing. I believe that my coming out was exactly the way it should have happened, and I had tremendous support and knowledge before coming out.
What would you say to a young person who is questioning their gender identity and wondering if they are non-binary?
Take your time to research and craft your own identity. Pay no attention to naysayers and know that your identity is solely dependent on you. Do what makes you happy and comfortable.
What are some misconceptions about non-binary people?
The major misconception that people have about non-binary people is that they are confused. This is a tragic misconception and if people took the time to understand and learn about our identity then they would realize that we are all just humans.
Why is it so important to celebrate non-binary identities?
It is important for us to celebrate various identities as it creates a diverse world and fosters a larger understanding for multiple persons. By sharing stories like mine on this platform, It helps others who may not have the opportunity to learn about themself in their familiar spaces, to relate, and leads to others like myself leading healthy and holistic lives.
In celebration,
