Friend, this is urgent.
Only 75 Southern Resident orcas are left alive, and the next generation is at extreme risk before even being born. When Tahlequah tragically lost her calf, she carried its body across the ocean for 17 grief-stricken days. The baby died just 30 minutes after birth, but poor Tahlequah couldn’t let go and refused to let the body sink. If we don't act now, this heartbreaking scene could play out over and over until this precious species is gone forever.
Due in large part to the devastating actions of greedy corporations, orca mothers like Tahlequah are starving and struggling to give birth to healthy young whales. More than TWO-THIRDS of orca pregnancies in these unique pods end in miscarriages – brought on by a dwindling food supply and constant survival stress. Without our urgent help, Southern Resident orcas could soon vanish from the face of the earth. So with time running out, we’re setting an urgent goal to raise $90,000 this World Orca Day – and a generous group of donors has agreed to match all gifts up to that goal to help us get there – but only until midnight tonight.
Please, we need your help to stop corporate greed from dooming our orcas to painful starvation and death: Will you donate $27 or more to Friends of the Earth now and have your membership gift MATCHED to fight for orcas, our oceans and our planet before it’s too late?
We won't sugarcoat it: Orcas’ risk of EXTINCTION is growing by the day. Not only are their primary prey – Chinook salmon – endangered, but industrial expansion is making this situation even worse.
Relentless noise from industrial shipping traffic interferes with orcas’ sonar abilities, making it exceedingly difficult to locate the already scarce food. And if that wasn't already enough, ship noise can also drive away orcas’ food sources entirely. But right now, the new Roberts Bank Terminal 2 is already close to construction, and shipping traffic is set to skyrocket!
Invaded by the commercial shipping industry, orcas face another massive threat: Big Oil. A huge expansion of the Trans Mountain Pipeline is about to bring up to 700 TIMES more tar sands oil through the waters these orcas call home. All it will take to wipe out these vulnerable creatures is ONE single oil spill!
We can’t let fossil fuel greed become a death sentence for them and all their relatives. That's why we urgently need to step up our fight to protect our orcas, our oceans and our planet, and why we're counting on your support before World Orca Day ends and our rare match opportunity expires.
But right now, we’re falling short of our must-hit $90,000 goal, so please don’t wait: Make your membership gift of $27 or more now and have it DOUBLED to help Friends of the Earth protect our orcas, our ocean ecosystems and the planet these precious species need to thrive.
