GEMS-MARS Now Accepting Second Round of Applications for 27b Grow Your Own Grants
Following an initial set of awards to 80 Michigan districts announced in late May, the Michigan Department of Education’s Office of Educator Excellence (OEE) is now welcoming applications for a second round of 27b Grow Your Own (GYO) grants. $91.9 million in federal funds is still available for districts to support non-certificated school staff earn teacher certification or current teachers earn additional endorsements.
Who should apply?
Intermediate school districts and local education agencies, both traditional and public school academies, are invited to apply, regardless of past GYO grant application status. MDE especially invites districts whose first round applications were not selected for funding to apply again in this second round.

What support is available?
To assist all districts—regardless of past application status—OEE has planned a special campaign of grant application assistance for the second round, including:
- A Word template that can be downloaded and completed offline for drafting and recording application responses, available both on the GYO Grant Website and on the GEMS-MARS application screens
- A newly updated Frequently Asked Questions resource page
- A Frequently Asked Questions support webinar, with registration now open on the GYO Grant Website
- A video with detailed instructions on how to successfully compete the GYO Round 2 grant application, posted to the GYO Website at the conclusion of the webinar
- Dedicated office hours for specific questions (look for updates and signup directions in later newsletters)
