We just received an important update from one of our candidate’s races: Susanna Gibson is running for the Virginia House of Delegates, District 57, and her GOP opponent, David Owen, has officially announced his public stance on abortion. He has come out in favor of a 15-week abortion ban.

We want to make something clear: a 15-week abortion ban is a dangerous and inhumane policy that would cause unnecessary suffering. Medical tests that detect serious problems with a fetus often cannot be confirmed until closer to 20 weeks. This would require expectant mothers to carry a pregnancy to term even once they learn that their baby will likely not survive after birth.

Susanna is a nurse practitioner who has seen firsthand the life-or-death importance of access to safe and legal abortion care that is not impeded by senseless and restrictive laws.

Here is why this matters: Virginia has an important opportunity this November to elect a pro-choice majority in their state legislature. However, if Republicans gain control, Governor Youngkin has stated that he will “gleefully” sign any abortion ban that reaches his desk. Virginia is one of the ONLY Southern states without extreme abortion bans or restrictions, and we need to keep it that way. Millions of women across the Southern region of our country are depending on us to preserve this critical access point.

We need more people like Susanna to run for office. Our country would be in a much better place if more women like Susanna, a nurse practitioner, and public health expert – were in the halls of power, legislating according to constituents’ needs that they’ve seen up close.

As Susanna’s campaign has stated, a 15-week abortion ban is “extreme, cruel, and extremely unpopular.” In fact, a vast majority of Virginians want abortion to remain protected. Susanna is running in a new, untested swing seat – and we believe she has what it takes to win. But she needs our help.
