Last month, the Supreme Court voted to end affirmative action, effectively dismantling efforts to ensure higher education is accessible to all, regardless of race, ethnicity, or zip code.

My career fighting for working-class families – first as a labor rights attorney, and now as a member of Congress – began with my parents. Despite not having graduated from college themselves, they worked hard to put all six of my siblings and me through college. Thanks to my parents’ sacrifices and years of efforts to break barriers to higher ed, I became a first-generation college graduate.

Diversity is one of our nation’s greatest strengths. Taking affirmative action off the table will strip the next generations – especially Black, Latino, and students of color across the country who are historically disadvantaged – of equal opportunity to quality education.

I am disappointed and frustrated at last week’s SCOTUS decision. But I am undeterred in my efforts to continue standing up for the working class.
