Great news for families ahead of the summer holidays

This week Oldham Council has launched a brand-new universal programme to enable every family across the borough to book a range of exciting activities for free this summer.

This amazing offer, which includes everything from cinema screenings, theatre shows, swimming sessions and family fun activities, will be a welcomed announcement to many households ahead of the upcoming school break.

This news comes in addition to the council’s ongoing (Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) Programme which continues from Monday 24 July to support children aged 5-16 on benefits-related free school meals with a host of enriching sessions over the summer.

What’s more, the council has also recently allocated new funding via the Household Support Fund to provide households on low income with food vouchers – worth £60 per eligible child – to support with food costs over the upcoming holidays.

Oldham's first Family Hubs launch

Come and join the excitement at Oldham's first Family Hub!

The Beever Family Hub will officially open its doors on 20 July between 10am and 2pm.

This is a great opportunity for families to enjoy a lots of fantastic activities for all ages, and find out about the support and advice they can get from Oldham's Family Hubs.

There will be plenty of activities for children of all ages. From bubbles and painting activities to go-kart and den making. Drop by to take a look inside the first of many Family Hubs!

Oldham Family Hubs will be one-stop shops for all services that relate to families and children, including health, social support and activities. They will provide a welcoming space to make it easier for families to access the support they need.

Join the Summer Reading Challenge at Oldham Library

Get ready for an exciting adventure this summer! Oldham Library and Gallery Oldham are hosting the Summer Reading Challenge for children aged four to 11 years old.

This amazing opportunity aims to keep kids active and engaged during the school holidays through the power of reading. The challenge begins with Sign Up Saturday on July 15, from 11am to 3pm.

By signing up, children receive free materials from Oldham Libraries and the Challenge website. They'll have the chance to explore new books, develop important skills, and discover new interests.

Don't miss the Sign-Up Saturday event at Oldham Library. Receive your Ready, Set Read! pack and enjoy themed activities including crazy golf, smoothie bikes, and a visit from World Champion skater, Jenna Downing.

Sign up to the Summer Reading Challenge ([link removed])

New measures look to ease town centre congestion

From July 17 we are introducing a four-week pilot scheme aimed at cutting traffic and tram congestion in Oldham Town Centre.

In a further attempt to make travel through the town centre easier, the council is to close access to Union Street from Bridge Street, Robson Street, and Greenhill Passage.

We appreciate this pilot may cause some disruption to residents and businesses but if no action is taken to reduce the congestion along Union Street, the tram service will have to be scaled back which will severely affect the users.

Changes to Oldham Way: Closures and crossover

Oldham Way will be closed for four nights this month, from 8pm to 5am for resurfacing works to take place while the road is quiet.

The road will be closed in both directions from Tuesday 18 to Thursday 20, and Sunday 23 July.

The closures will be in place from Manchester Road roundabout to Prince Street.

After reopening on Monday 24 July, there will be a new crossover between the eastbound and westbound sides between the on-slip road to Emmott Way and return onto the westbound carriageway after Waterloo Street.

Wellington Street and Waterloo Street underneath Oldham Way will remain closed until late autumn to all traffic.

Oldham Music Service student graduates from a prestigious academy.

Passionate musician, James Kelly from Shaw, Oldham graduated this week from the Royal Academy of London. James started his journey with the Oldham Music Service at St Joseph's when he was in primary school.

He played with all of the brass bands, wind bands, and orchestras. James then continued to receive lessons with Oldham Music Service staff when he moved on to Crompton House School where his musical interests were further developed.

With dedication and hard work as well as the guidance of school and OMS teachers, he gradually and consistently improved over the years and ultimately rose to the position of a principal player in all of the various ensembles that he was a member of, both in and out of school.

After his A levels, James went on to Music College in London and has this week graduated from the Royal Academy of Music.

A massive well done to James on his achievement.
