Rise of the Criminal Hybrid State in Venezuela

Five years ago, we began asking if Venezuela was a criminal state with an investigation, Venezuela: A Mafia State? This week, we confirm that it is.

Across five chapters, the “Rise of the Criminal Hybrid State in Venezuela" chronicles how illegal groups helped President Nicolás Maduro cling to power after the death of Hugo Chávez, how gangs like the Tren de Aragua have been permitted to develop criminal fiefdoms, and what now lies ahead for Venezuela’s hybrid state as Maduro rehabilitates himself on the international stage and consolidates power.

DataInSights: Are Pretrial Detentions Fueling Organized Crime in Paraguay?

Insecurity is rising in Paraguay, and the government is increasing recruitment opportunities for organized crime groups by jailing thousands of people merely accused of crimes alongside actual convicts.

In it, we explained the obscure global supply chain that sustains the production of synthetic drugs, the role of Mexico’s so-called cartels in supplying US demand, and how regulations to limit this illegal trade are failing.

On July 7, this investigation -- and previous coverage of the synthetic drugs trade -- was used in a special international forum in Mexico’s Senate.
