** Standardised packaging on vapes reduces appeal to teenagers

Research from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King’s College London and Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) has found that standardising e-cigarette (vape) packaging by removing brand imagery is associated with a decrease in the appeal of vapes among teenagers.

The study, which gave groups of adults and teens three packaging options to choose from, suggests that regulating packaging could be an effective means of stopping young people from using vapes without lessening the appeal of vaping to adults who smoke.

Researchers found that those in the teenage group were more likely to report that their peers would have no interest in vapes when marketed in standardised packaging. In contrast, the adult group interest in using vapes was not reduced by the standardisation of packaging.

Deborah Arnott, chief executive officer at ASH, said, “This research shows that it’s possible to make vape packaging less attractive to children without undermining the appeal of e-cigarettes to adult smokers trying to quit. This is an important finding given the concerning rise in underage vaping in recent times. The government should take note and commit to implementing standardised packaging for vapes and vaping products without delay.”

** Jeremy Hunt has told ministers there will be no extra money to give millions of public

Sector workers are to be given an average 6% pay rise, potentially leaving departments facing a difficult choice between raising salaries or cutting frontline services.

Senior Conservatives are concerned they will have to cut frontline services across education, health and policing if they are expected to fund the estimated £5bn difference between budgeted increases of 3.5% and the pay review body recommendations.

Gillian Keegan, the education secretary, Steve Barclay, the health secretary, Ben Wallace, the defence secretary, Alex Chalk, the justice secretary, and Suella Braverman, the home secretary, are all said to be pushing Sunak to back the review bodies.

** The Overlooked Environmental Impact of Vaping

A new US report found that the number of single use e-cigarettes being sold could, if lined up end to end, span across the country and back- and barely any of them are disposed of responsibly.

Disposable e-cigarettes have come to compromise 53% of sales, overtaking reusable products.

In addition to creating plenty of plastic waste, discarded e-cigarettes can be considered both e-waste (because of their circuitry and lithium-ion batteries) and hazardous waste (because they contain nicotine). E-cigarettes are also difficult to recycle, and many people don’t even try: A 2022 survey found that just 8% of teen or young-adult vapers sent their used disposable devices to recycling facilities.

The report suggests people who vape can make a simple switch to benefit the environment: choose reusable devices instead of those that go straight in the trash. “Nothing used for a day or two,” the report says, “should pollute our environment for hundreds of years.”
