Friends,
This week was the last week the Senate was in session before we hit the road for the August state work period. I can’t wait to be back home in West Virginia, where I have some exciting visits lined up all across the state. Speaking of hitting the road
One of the last items of business this week had to do with improving our transportation infrastructureincluding our roads, bridges, and highways. All of the details are here in my weekly newsletter, so keep scrolling for more information, and click here or the image below to watch my weekly video message.
Be sure to forward this newsletter to a few friends to share the news, and I hope to see you back home in West Virginia!
Moving Forward
Like many of you, I drive our West Virginia roads frequentlytraveling all across our stateand I know the many needs we have when it comes to our highways and bridges. I’ve also heard from many of you about the need to make critical improvements to our state’s infrastructure.
Well, I have some good news: This week, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee (which I am a leader on) advanced a comprehensive highway bill. As chairman of the subcommittee responsible for drafting this legislation, I was proud to author and ultimately secure many provisions to improve infrastructure and encourage development in our state. The bill will do so much to better the lives of West Virginians and others traveling across the United States; facilitate commerce and encourage economic growth; and provide the certainty states and other stakeholders need to complete critical projects. President Trump and I spoke one on one about this bill recently, and I was glad to see him express his support this week.
Now that the committee has advanced the highway bill, it will head to the full Senate for a vote. A few days ago, I spoke on the Senate floor about the bill and my support for this critical piece of legislation. Caring for New and Expecting Moms
Unfortunately, it has become clear that new and expecting mothers living in rural and remote areas in West Virginia and across the country are lacking access to important health care services. My colleagues and I realize the importance of addressing this issue, which is why we introduced legislation this week known as the Rural Maternal and Obstetric Modernization of Services (MOMS) Act. The bill, which is bipartisan, will strengthen our efforts to protect the health and wellbeing of these mothers and their children and ensure that new and expecting mothers living in rural areas have access to the health care they need and deserve.
