Virginia Republicans unleash attack ads in

12 suburban House districts

Washington Post | Gregory Schneider

July 13, 2023

The war for the Virginia suburbs has begun, with the Republican caucus of the House of Delegates unleashing attack ads in 12 districts seen as crucial to keeping control of the chamber in this fall's elections.

The aggressively early. move, less than three weeks after candidates were selected in primary contests across the state, follows the lead of Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R), who has promised an all-out fight for supremacy in the legislature.

On Tuesday, Youngkin rolled out an online campaign to encourage early voting by Republicans - taking advantage of voter access laws passed by Democrats that Republicans in the General Assembly have tried to roll back. Read more

Why Biden's Student Loan Plan Never Got More Traction

WG Economy | David Winston

July 12, 2023

President Biden's student loan plan has been shot down by the Supreme Court, with the President telling people that "Republicans snatched away hope." B ut the reality is that outside the Democratic base, the plan never had widespread support, in addition to its constitutional problems.

Based on trending data from Winning the Issues, the plan had never been broadly popular. From our latest survey (June 19-21), June was the first time support for the plan had reached 50%, with 42% opposed. The electorate supported the plan by a 47-45 margin in April, and in March, it was at 47-43. However, in June, independents were split at 45-45. There was a significant partisan division on the plan, with Democrats supporting 72-21 and Republicans opposing 30-62. WG Economy, July 12, 2023.pdf

With Trump way ahead in 2024 Republican polls, Iowa becomes do-or-die for DeSantis

Reuters | James Oliphant, Gram Slattery & Alexandra Ulmer

July 12, 2023

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' campaign is making a high-risk bet that it can halt Donald Trump's march to the Republican presidential nomination by winning the key state of Iowa next January, despite the former president's commanding lead in polls and growing questions about DeSantis' viability.

Even as he trails Trump by close to 30 percentage points in national polls, DeSantis and his advisers are sticking to a long-haul, Iowa-first strategy. They hope that an upset win in the state would stall Trump's momentum, according to two sources close to the campaign, who asked not to be identified so that they could discuss campaign strategy. The anti-Trump presidential candidates

clear an important hurdle

Chris Christie and Asa Hutchinson, congrats.

But you have some work to do.

Politico | Zach Montellaro & Steven Shepard

July 12, 2023

Donald Trump's critics got a big break in the Republican primary on Wednesday, though they'll need a few more for it to truly matter.

The first poll that meets all the criteria for candidates is to qualify for the first GOP debate was released earlier this week. And it opened the door for two candidates openly critical of the former president to get on stage come Aug. 23.

The survey, from the pollster Morning Consult, satisfied the Republican National Committee's rules for what counts as a qualifying poll, the RNC confirmed t oPOLITICO - principally that it surveyed at least 800 likely GOP primary voters, an unusually large sample size for national polls that measure the broader electorate. Pressure Mounts for Trump as Republican

Debate Stage Grows

Newsweek| Kaitlin Lewis

July 12, 2023

Two additional presidential hopefuls have reached the number of individual donors needed to qualify for the GOP primary debate next month, although it remains unclear if front-runner and former President Donald Trump will participate.

Former Governor Chris Christie announced on CNN Wednesday night that his campaign had surpassed the 40,000 donors required by the Republican National Committee (RNC) to make the debate stage as of Tuesday, and South Carolina Senator Tim Scott declared earlier in the day that he had received support from 53,000 individual donors across the country.

Both announcements arrived a day after Morning Consultant released the first poll that meets all the RNC's rules to count as a qualifying poll for the GOP debate. The committee confirmed to Politico on Wednesday that Morning Consultant had surveyed "at least 800 likely GOP primary voters," which means that the poll can be used to measure if Republican candidates have garnered enough support to participate on the debate stage. Georgia Republicans welcome state Rep. Mainor's switch from Dem as new life of the party

Georgia Recorder | Ross Williams

July 11, 2023

Controversial Republican state Rep. Mesha Mainor of Atlanta, formerly Democratic state Rep. Mesha Mainor of Atlanta, announced she was switching parties Tuesday.

"This was not an easy decision," she said at a conference beneath a statue of Martin Luther King Jr. outside the state Capitol. "I have been a Democrat my entire life. My family are Democrats. So this was not easy."

Mainor, who was first elected in 2020, irked Democrats for her full-throated support of a failed school voucher policy which would have sent $6,500 of state money to families of children in the bottom 25% of Georgia schools to pull them out and educate them at home or in private schools. The bill will likely be revived and debated again in next year's session.

State Sen. Josh McLaurin, a Sandy Springs Democrat, was so irked that he offered a $1,000 campaign donation to anyone who decided to challenge Mainor in a primary. Read more

Youngkin launches efforts to get Republicans to vote early or by mail

CNN Politics | Veronica Stracqualursi

July 11, 2023

Virginia's Gov. Glenn Youngkin is encouraging Republicans to vote absentee by mail or early in-person ahead of his state's pivotal legislative elections this year.

Youngkin on Tuesday launched a new program, "Secure Your Vote Virginia," aimed at cutting into Democrats' mail-in voting advantage as Republican voters' confidence in the voting method are low in part from former President Donald Trump's claims that it's rife with fraud. Read more

WG Discussion Points

'Bidenomics' won't fix President's economic problems

Cherry-picking and manipulating data are hallmarks of the president's 2024 campaign

WG Discussion Points | David Winston

July 7, 2023

Today is the official kickoff of the Biden campaign's revamped economic message: "'Bidenomics' is working for America" and, as his press secretary put it, "people are feeling better about their personal finances." It makes me wonder what people she is talking about or talking to.

In reality, President Joe Biden's speech Wednesday in Chicago is likely going to be an imaginative, largely misleading take on the economy, designed to counteract Biden's consistently bad polling numbers. But hard as Biden and his team might try to claw their way out of what is an economic mess of their own making, people aren't buying it. Read more
