Hi John,

More avenues for pushing the UK to leave fossil fuel companies’ secret weapon behind are opening up in parliament - but we need your help! The Conservative MP Chris Skidmore has put down an amendment to the Energy Bill on leaving the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), and we need as many MPs as possible to get behind it.

Just this week, Skidmore was quoted alongside us in the Guardian on news of the government’s own official advisors recommending withdrawal from the toxic treaty, which is “weaponised by fossil fuel companies in order to sue governments for introducing climate policies.” (1)

Can you ask your MP to put their name to the Exit ECT amendment?
Ask your MP to sign
Getting enough MPs to support Skidmore’s amendment will ensure it is debated at the report stage of the Energy Bill’s progress through the House of Commons. This heaps further pressure on the UK government, at a time when their feet are being held to the fire.

In Europe, the European Commission just made a coordinated EU withdrawal from the ECT its formal position. (2) This would mean European countries working together to maximise the benefits of leaving the treaty - and gives us a great opportunity to push the UK to join the exodus. Can you write to your MP now and ask them to back this amendment today?

Thank you for all your help keeping the pressure up, as we inch closer to removing this huge threat to our ability to secure a liveable future.

PS. Once you've emailed your MP, a reminder that we're raising funds for the crucial campaign against new oil extraction in Ecuador. Ecuadorian campaigners need our support ahead of a referendum on oil drilling next month. Donate now to back their campaign.
