Let's celebrate World Orca Day!

Hello John,

Today, World Orca Day, is a day of joy for Born Free. Let’s celebrate these complex, family animals, not least ‘our own’ cherished orca Springer (pictured above).

Aged 22, this remarkable female swims off Canada’s British Columbia coastline, with her two children Spirit (born 2013) and Storm (born 2017). Adopt Springer today, and you can help keep her family safe.

Springer's story

Springer has an extraordinary story. Twenty-one years ago TODAY, she was released from a sea pen in the Johnstone Strait, having been found alone near Seattle, USA. Just a baby (orca have a similar lifespan to humans), she’d become lost when her mother Sutlej died.

Fortunately, Springer’s unique calls were identified by our friends at OrcaLab and she was brought 250 miles by boat and put in a sea pen. After a couple of days, on 14 July 2002, the pen was opened and she swam free, to be enveloped amidst her loving family.

Springer has swum wild with her family ever since, carefully monitored by OrcaLab – established in 1970 and, supported by our orca adopters since 1994, the world’s longest study of cetacea (dolphins and whales). She is a clear reminder why wild animals belong in the wild and should be protected there.
