Dutta-Gupta Testifies Before U.S. Senate Committee on Child Tax Credit
This morning, Indi Dutta-Gupta testified about the Child Tax Credit (CTC) to the Senate Finance Committee’s Subcommittee on Taxation and IRS Oversight. He traced the bipartisan history of the CTC back to a commission composed of appointees named by Presidents Reagan and Bush. He also outlined research proving the CTC’s effectiveness in fighting child poverty—particularly when it’s fully refundable for families with low incomes. And he closed by urging Congress to strengthen the CTC.

Free Direct File Tool Would Promote Equity in Tax Code
CLASP encourages the IRS to implement a permanent direct file option. For this tool to be most effective, Congress must invest sustainable funding in the IRS to maintain the technology and provide comprehensive customer support. Policymakers must also maintain the Inflation Reduction Act appropriations to the IRS, rather than divert the funding to other budgetary purposes outside of the IRS.

Impact of Recent SCOTUS Decisions
The just-ended session of the Supreme Court included several decisions that affect people with low incomes, communities of color, immigrants, LGBTQIA+ folks, and other populations that have been historically marginalized. The Court addressed such topics as affirmative action, labor unions, LGBTQIA+ rights, student debt relief, immigration enforcement, and more.

Congress must take action to restore access to the Child Tax Credit (CTC) and create a permanent solution to fight poverty for all children in the United States. Restoring eligibility for the CTC would provide support for up to one million children in the United States and have an estimated impact of $3.3 billion for children in immigrant families.
