A higher education plan was released that includes canceling all of the existing student loan debt that’s owed by roughly 45 million Americans.
The higher education plan is surrounded by progressive lawmakers, including Reps. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), and Bernie Sanders.
The overwhelming majority of the people who are going to benefit from this legislation are working-class people.
Everyone who owes a student loan would be eligible, regardless of their type of loan they have. That includes parents who took out money to pay for their children’s education.

The American people bailed out Wall Street. It’s time for Wall Street to bail out the American people.
The process is fairly straightforward: The bill, if accepted by majority votes, would automatically cancel student loans that were made by the federal government. Private student loans would go through an application process. In both cases, borrowers would not have to pay federal taxes on the amount of loan forgiveness they receive.
