Dear John,

As we creep towards August and continue the longest legislative session that I can remember, one of our top priority bills – LD 1895, the bill to responsibly advance offshore wind in Maine – is still working its way through the legislative process.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve worked closely with legislative and organizational partners to ensure that the best possible version of this bill passes with the highest standards for labor, the environment, and equity. After a few iterations and thoughtful negotiations, environmental groups, labor organizations, members of the fishing community, legislators, and the Mills Administration recently agreed on consensus language that will move this bill forward.

The amended language is a testament to all of this hard work, and it safeguards the interests of Maine’s environment, working people, and most vulnerable communities. In addition to delivering the clean energy we need to stabilize energy prices and meet our climate goals, this bill will now ensure that a Maine offshore wind port is built out with strong labor standards and zero-emission green technology. It still strongly incentivizes siting projects outside of Lobster Management Area 1, an area of broad consensus across Maine’s commercial fisheries.

Yesterday, this version of the bill passed out of the Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee. Soon, it will head to the House and Senate for final votes, and then to the Governor’s desk.

We’re so appreciative of our community of activists who have helped get the bill to this point – and we’ll keep you posted on any final actions that will help push this bill over the finish line. Thank you!

Stay tuned,
