Why grassroots support on the Farm Bill is so important:
John, you’ve probably seen my name in a few of these emails, so I thought it was time I introduced myself. I’m Representative Chellie Pingree, SEEC Vice Chair.
Our farmers are on the frontlines of our climate crisis, John. Severe drought, record flooding, mounting wildfires, and other extreme weather conditions are all hurting our farm lands — both on land and at sea.
A recent study from the Nature Sustainability journal just found that more than 90 percent of the world's marine food supplies are at risk from environmental changes, like rising temperatures and pollution. And considering the U.S. is one of the top producers, this spells really bad news for one of our major farming industries. As a Member of Congress from Maine, this hits very close to home.
That’s where the Farm Bill comes in. Under this landmark legislation, we won’t just be giving our farmers more resources — we’ll be giving them the tools to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Now here’s where you come in. We’re not just facing opposition from climate deniers in the House — the powerful Agribusiness and food processing lobby is working against us to protect their pocketbooks, too. And both of them are joining forces to strip the Farm Bill of critical conservation programs.
This bill isn’t some partisan move. It’s a critical effort to ensure a sustainable future for our farmlands and keep food on your table for generations to come.
Thanks for your support, team. We’ll keep you updated.
