Hi,

In 2018, the Trump administration made it much easier for big corporations to take advantage of people by selling junk health insurance plans. These health insurance companies are able to offer misleading short-term insurance products, discriminate against pre-existing conditions, offer little to no coverage, and burden consumers with thousands of dollars of surprise medical bills.1

President Biden is currently taking a stand against junk fees and aiming to crack down on greedy corporations by setting enhanced limits on short-term health insurance plans, cutting down on surprise medical fees, and demanding increased oversight for a wide range of industries.

Sign the petition: President Biden must crack down on junk insurance plans and protect families from predatory health insurance corporations.

In President Biden's recent White House announcement, he said, “It's not necessarily about healthcare, it’s about being played for a sucker…That's a scam, and it has to end.”2 He’s right — it’s time to end another one of Trump’s scams.

Short-term health insurance plans can be a last resort for people in transitional periods in their lives who need health coverage for just a few months in between jobs or due to other unexpected circumstances. In 2016, the Obama Administration limited short-term health insurance plans to 3 months — and it encouraged families to sign up for year-round plans under Obamacare.

Then, Trump was elected.

Trump’s administration loosened regulations on these short-term plans and enabled them to last up to 1 year and be renewed for up to 3 years.3 Families are directly hurt by this because they are not fully covered for a long period of time and get hit with hidden fees and medical expenses not covered by the plan. Major health insurers are preying on people during some of their most vulnerable moments.

Another major issue with these greedy insurance companies is the hidden fees. Certain loopholes allow insurance companies to contract with hospitals but claim the hospital isn’t part of the network. Insurance companies are able to invoice surprise bills to patients because they used an “out-of-network” hospital.4

We cannot allow Trump’s policies and greedy corporations to continue exploiting the medical system and hurting families.

Urge President Biden to crack down on junk insurance plans.

Thanks for taking action,
