Research Brings Hope to Children Like Catherine ([link removed])
Make a Gift ([link removed])
Dear Friend of CURE Epilepsy,
Five years ago, I welcomed my beloved daughter, Catherine, into the world. At just 20 months old, my once vibrant, playful toddler grew to endure a staggering 200 seizures on her darkest days and no fewer than 30 on her best. The onset of seizures brought her development to a sudden halt.

Catherine was diagnosed with Focal Cortical Dysplasia (FCD), a congenital abnormality causing treatment-resistant childhood epilepsy. We made the impossible decision to pursue invasive brain surgery, which brought a glimmer of hope. Her progress was remarkable, and I still remember the joy when she waved at me and spoke her first words, "Bye-bye, Mama!" after two years of silence. Research gifted me my daughter’s “first” words, and that is why a gift to CURE Epilepsy is so important.

Research brings hope to Catherine and the 470,000 other children in the US living with epilepsy. CURE Epilepsy prioritizes innovative research, including that of CURE Epilepsy Grantee, Dr. Jeong Ho Lee, whose research is making strides toward alternative treatments for FCD ([link removed]) .

After a year of seizure freedom, my daughter’s seizures have returned, although not as severe or frequent. As I look at kindergartens for Catherine, I am also exploring another invasive surgery—a choice no mother should face. A gift today helps parents like me envision a future where we do not live life dreading the next seizure and fearing its lasting impact.

Through Catherine’s countless medical consultations, I have learned an important lesson: it takes a village of support to navigate the unpredictable journey of epilepsy. As a member of the epilepsy community, I consider you a part of my village. Together, we can work towards a brighter future for parents like me, children like Catherine, and the progress of epilepsy research. Please join me with a gift to this critical work. With hope and gratitude,

Nora Hennessy
