Friend,
Our communities want and need a health-focused approach to drugs. Yet politicians have prioritized punishment over solutions that will keep us safer.
Decades of destructive drug war policies have resulted in drug offenses becoming one of the leading causes of arrest in the U.S. – the vast majority for possession alone. Possession of even small amounts of drugs can have lifelong consequences that prevent a person from getting a job, a student loan, a place to live, and so much more.
This criminalization approach is also fueling the tragic overdose crisis that is killing our loved ones. Drug prohibition has made illicit drugs stronger, more available, and cheaper than ever which has led to the dramatic increase in overdose deaths.
Enough is enough. Learn more and watch our video about why it’s time to decriminalize drugs and invest in health services nationwide.
Drug decriminalization means that people are no longer arrested or incarcerated for drugs for personal use. Instead, we should reinvest the savings from enforcement into addiction services and social supports. This includes voluntary treatment, housing, employment, harm reduction, recovery services, and peer support.
In 2020, we took an historic step forward with our victory making Oregon the first state to decriminalize drugs and invest in health services. Since then, thousands of people have been saved from a drug possession arrest and its devastating consequences. And more than $300 million has been invested into lifesaving services and support for communities statewide.
With your help, we’re leading the fight to do the same across the country. Visit our site to see how we’re working to decriminalize drugs and build a better future, together.
