Last month marked a year since the Supreme Court officially overturned
Roe v. Wade. Since then, more than two dozen states have enacted draconian abortion bans and/or heavily restricted abortion access (in many states there are NO exceptions).
And in states like Georgia, Arizona, Iowa, and Ohio, the state legislatures are the ones making decisions to dismantle abortion rights, protections for LGBTQ+ families, and attacking public education.
As former President Barack Obama put it:
It’s NEVER been more important to support Democrats running at the state and local levels.
It’s why last year we supported 400+ pro-choice Democratic scientists and healthcare providers at the state and local level in 47 states. Nearly three dozen were pro-choice women with backgrounds in healthcare and reproductive care, including nurses, pediatricians, physicians, and pharmacists. And now, with so much still on the line, we’re preparing to do it again and support even more!
But we won’t be able to do that without you: Which is why we’re asking if you’ll donate to help us elect pro-choice women in healthcare in states with abortion bans like Dr. Michelle Au in Georgia, Eva Burch in Arizona, Dr. Megan Srinivas in Iowa, and Rachel Baker in Ohio:
In Georgia, Gov. Brian Kemp and the GOP-held legislature passed one of the nation’s most extreme abortion bans into effect.
Dr. Michelle Au (GA HD-50) — Dr. Michelle Au is the only pro-choice physician in the entire Georgia General Assembly.
She has been a tireless pro-choice champion in a state where Republicans passed one of the nation’s most extreme abortion bans into law. Republicans tried to draw Michelle out of the assembly entirely during redistricting as punishment and are already making her a top target in 2024.
This House district was decided by just 1,500 votes in 2020 and is widely considered one of the most competitive state legislative races in America.
In Arizona, the GOP-led legislature passed a law criminalizing abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. Even worse, a judge lifted an injunction on a pre-statehood Arizona law that bans abortion in nearly all circumstances, including rape and incest.
Eva Burch (AZ SD-9) – Eva is a former emergency room nurse and nurse practitioner who won against a vulnerable GOP Senator who opposed abortion in the toughest State Senate race in the state last November. In office, she serves in the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services and is a champion when it comes to making healthcare and reproductive care more accessible.
Republicans only hold a majority in the Arizona State Senate by a single seat, with the chamber split 15-14. Eva is the most vulnerable Democrat in the State Senate so if we want to flip this Chamber (which we can!) we have to defend her this upcoming year.
In Iowa, the state legislature recently passed a six-week abortion ban after the governor called a special session to seek a vote on the ban.
Megan Srinivas (IA HD-30) Dr. Megan Srinivas is an infectious disease physician running on a platform of expanding healthcare and reproductive access, demanding government accountability, and protecting workers' rights.
Republicans hold a majority in the Iowa House of Representatives and it’s never been more important to have pro-choice leaders like Megan on the frontlines to fight back as the chamber continues to grow more extreme.
In Ohio, a six week abortion ban similar to the one in Georgia currently on hold by the state’s Supreme Court. Governor Mike DeWine is encouraging the House’s Republican supermajority to revisit the ban to avoid the passage of a ballot measure to protect abortion.
Rachel Baker (OH HD-27) Rachel currently works as the Nurse Researcher for the largest healthcare system in Cincinnati and has a proven track record advocating for patients. In office, Rachel serves on the Health Provider Services and Public Health Policy committees and has been an outspoken critic of anti-abortion legislation.
Republicans currently hold a super majority in the Ohio House of Representatives. And Rachel is fighting tooth and nail as a Freshman member against the increasingly extreme Ohio GOP to stand up for what’s right.
One donation might not seem like it will make a difference, but many of these races will be decided by a couple hundred votes. So when thousands of you step up and donate it gives us the resources to support a historic wave of pro-choice women in healthcare who will be on the frontlines of so many of the tough fights that affect our families.
If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will be immediately processed.
