Hey John,
At last! We are ECSTATIC to announce that Opill - a progestin-only daily birth control pill - has been approved for over-the-counter sale - no doctor's visit or prescription needed!
And the best part? We fought hard for no age restrictions, and WE WON! Just like Plan B Emergency Contraception, you won't have to show ID to buy Opill.

Our President, Deb Hauser, reacted with this statement:
“Having an Over-The-Counter option for birth control pills is incredibly important and long overdue. We know that the far right will continue to attack and limit access to reproductive health care, and we need to ensure young people have everything they need to lead healthy lives and plan their futures.”
So what's next? We still don't know how much Opill will cost, or how insurance coverage of over-the-counter birth control pills might work. Advocates for Youth has been in meetings and strategy sessions with advocacy groups, the Biden Administration, and more to figure this out. Over the next year we will:
- Advocate for Medicaid and private insurance to cover over-the-counter birth control
- Ensure young people are at the decision-making table, advising policymakers to remember their real-world experiences when creating policy
- Support young people's campaigns to bring Opill to their student stores and into on-campus vending machines
- Let young people lead in any contraception work we do
All of that work will take funding! If you're excited about this victory, but you know there's more work to be done, consider donating to our work here.
In solidarity and gratitude,
Geoff Corey, Angela Maske, and the #FreeThePill Youth Council
