I am pleased to share that our bill to protect working moms, the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA), is now LAW!
The PWFA is a federal law that prohibits discrimination toward pregnant workers in the workplace. This includes being forced out of jobs and being denied reasonable accommodations including for childbirth and related medical conditions like fertility treatments, postpartum depression and pregnancy loss.
Accommodations can include providing seating for workers who have to be on their feet all day, more bathroom breaks, temporary reassignments to roles with less exposure to toxins, flexible schedules and more. I think we can all agree that these are all commonsense considerations.
It’s about time that women were free to pursue their careers and care for their families without risking their health. The PWFA expands worker protections for millions nationwide.
This is a long and hard-fought for win, John. The PWFA has been reintroduced in nearly every legislative session since it was first introduced to Congress in 2012. And more than three decades before its introduction, the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed but it did not go far enough to prevent rampant discrimination against pregnant workers.
Lauren has helped keep the PWFA a priority in Congress by backing the bill for years and voting for its passage — now, we are proud to celebrate this victory together with this team.
This new law goes to show the power of this grassroots movement behind Lauren and the best interests of our country. There’s more work to be done for women’s rights and beyond, John, will you add a contribution today to ensure we can continue making critical progress for working families?
