John -

Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen soaring temperatures across the world.
Monday, July 3, was the hottest day anyone had ever measured on Earth —
until we broke that record the very next day, and then twice more since
then. In the northeastern U.S., we’re seeing deadly flash flooding just
weeks after smoke from the Canadian wildfires filled our skies.

The climate crisis is here and now, and the pressure to end the era of
fossil fuels is growing. The U.S. continues to be the top oil producer in
the world and the second biggest emitter of fossil fuels, causing
disproportionate climate change impacts globally.

That means we have a critical role to play in reversing this alarming
trend and ensuring a future for us and our planet. President Biden holds
the power to meet this moment with the urgency and seriousness it
deserves, but it will take serious public pressure — from every level of
our communities — to drive him to take real climate action.

Our local elected officials are in a unique position to champion our
movement, so we’re looking to have as many of them as possible sign on to
our appeal to President Biden to end the era of fossil fuels. As their
constituent, you’re in the best position to amplify this pledge and earn
their support so we’re asking:

There is growing outrage over Biden’s climate hypocrisy, and global
recognition that we need to take action to phase out fossil fuels to have
any hope of a livable future. Our summer actions, including this pledge,
are all part of our escalation arc that will lead up to the March to End
Fossil Fuels in New York.

Garnering widespread support for this pledge from local elected officials
is crucial for amplifying our shared demands to President Biden ahead of
the summit. These include:

 1. Declaring a climate emergency to reinstate the crude oil export ban;
 2. Phasing out fossil fuel production on public lands and waters;
 3. Denying all permits for new fossil fuel infrastructure;
 4. Shutting down projects like Willow, the Dakota Access Pipeline, the
Mountain Valley Pipeline, and Line 5;
 5. Upholding and strengthening bedrock environmental protections in NEPA
and the CWA.

From mayors to city council members to members of Congress, the success of
this pledge depends on us having as many officials sign on as possible —
but we can’t accomplish this on our own. We need you — the constituents
they’re sworn to represent — to take direct action and help us reach them.

[ [link removed] ]We’ll have more details for you soon but first, we have to get a sense
of who is ready and willing to take this action with us. Please take 30
seconds to respond and tell us if we can count on you to deliver the
pledge to your local elected officials.

Thank you,

Jeff Ordower
