Ballot initiatives are the lifeblood of democracy.

Ballot initiatives are the lifeblood of democracy.

At Stand Up America, we love championing a good ballot initiative—and helping to defeat a bad one.

From helping pass Proposal 2 in Michigan, which protected and expanded the right to vote, to helping defeat Proposal 128 in Arizona, which would have given legislators the power to overturn ballot initiatives already approved by voters, the Stand Up America community has contacted over a million voters to make sure they know about even the most complicated measures on the ballot.

Now, there’s a measure on the ballot in Ohio, Issue One, that would make it harder for Ohioans to pass future ballot initiatives—including the upcoming measure to protect abortion rights. We need your help to defeat it.

GET OUT THE VOTE

Ohio Republicans have called this special election with only one thing on the ballot: Issue One, a measure that would make it much harder to pass citizen-led ballot initiatives, starting with a November initiative that would protect abortion access.

They hope to raise the threshold to pass citizen-led ballot issues to 60%. If they are successful, just 40.1% of voters could veto any measure, even if it’s supported by a majority of Ohioans, essentially doing away with majority rule and the principle of one person, one vote.

Obviously, these bad actors don’t actually care about what Ohio voters want. They’re simply flipping through their playbook, trying to find any way they can to enforce their draconian abortion laws. And after watching voters in Michigan, California, and Vermont protect their right to abortion access through ballot measures last year, they’re trying to make sure Ohio voters can’t do the same.

If they’re successful in Ohio, you can bet you’ll see similar tactics in an election near you. Click here to sign up to write letters, encouraging Ohio voters to fight back.

Thanks for all that you do.
