Safe Kennel Saves Lives

Celebrating 14 years of providing safehousing to survivors and their pets

In May 2009, Doorways became one of nine domestic violence shelters in the United States, and the first in Virginia, to provide emergency shelter for pets along with their people. Providing safehousing to survivors and their pets eliminated a significant barrier to safety for many animal lovers: the choice between escaping violence and leaving their beloved pet behind. We believe survivors should never have to make that choice. Our Safe Kennel offers pets year-round climate control (heat and air conditioning), indoor and outdoor areas, and most importantly, a safe escape along with their family.
