Hi John!

THIS VOTE IS A VICTORY!

The European Parliament has passed the Nature Restoration Law [4], despite
the ongoing attacks of far-right and conservative parties to vote it down.
We are happy that they did not succeed with their campaign, as this law is
crucial for combating climate change and protecting our environment!

Restoring nature is essential to shield ourselves from floods and droughts
caused by climate change. Trees and plants play a vital role in keeping
water on the land and preventing heat-related issues in city centers.

"THIS SHOWS THAT EVERY CITIZEN HAS A VOTE AND A VOICE THAT COUNTS, IN
UPCOMING ELECTIONS IN SPAIN, THE NETHERLANDS THIS YEAR, AND IN THE ENTIRE
EU ELECTIONS NEXT YEAR.” – MÉLANIE VOGEL AND THOMAS WAITZ, CO-CHAIRS
OF THE EUROPEAN GREENS

The success of this legislation is thanks to the mobilization of climate
activists, NGOs, media, the Greens and other progressives in the European
Parliament, and countless citizens. Their dedication ensured the survival
of this crucial piece of the Green Deal.

Looking ahead, we need similar mobilization for the upcoming Regulation on
the Sustainable Use of Plant Protection Products, and of course for the
European Elections 2024.

EUROPEAN GREENS IN FAVOUR OF LEADING CANDIDATES AND TRANSNATIONAL LISTS

* Our co-chairs Mélanie Vogel and Thomas Waitz re-affirmed their support
of Spitzenkandidaten and transnational lists:
* "It should be a no-brainer that in European elections, Europeans should
be able to vote for candidates running together in the whole European
Union. Transnational lists make this possible.”
* During the last General Affairs Council on 27 June, most countries
opposed transnational lists and the idea to link leading candidates with
the next President of the European Commission. [6]

* Two years after the Estonian Greens (Eestimaa Rohelised) submitted a
formal petition with more than 35.000 signatures, the parliament recently
approved same-sex marriage in Estonia.
* From 2024, Estonia will be the first post-Soviet country to legalise
same-sex marriage and joint adoption.
* Congratulations to everyone who worked on this positive change!

TILT! PETITION

WATER CRISIS IN EUROPE!

[9]

Europe is facing its worst drought in 500 years. This means more fires and,
in the long term, desertification. Today’s droughts are exacerbated by
excessive water use in intensive agriculture, mining, tourism and other
sectors. Corporations have contaminated, wasted and privatised water for
their exclusive benefit.

The situation is alarming all over the continent, especially in the Iberian
Peninsula and other Mediterranean countries. We urgently need democratic
control on such an essential resource as water.

THEREFORE, WE CALL UPON EUROPEAN GOVERNMENTS TO TAKE THE FOLLOWING
MEASURES:

* Enact legislation protecting water resources from excessive use
* Control and cap the use of water by commercial sectors
* Mandate sectors with high water consumption, such as intensive
agriculture, tourism, energy and industry, to have sufficiency plans to
reduce consumption in case of crisis
* Create a European fund to support local governments to re-municipalise
the control of water

GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

Great news from the European Parliament. The members have approved its
position on the directive against gender-based violence. We are making
feminist history with this ambitious and inclusive position on EU rules to
end violence against women and all gender-based violence.
