Opinion: Switching smokers to vaping central to UK public health
Writing in the Eureporter, Political Editor Nick Powell, discusses the government’s ‘swap to stop’ programme which “promotes vaping as a much safer alternative to smoking cigarettes”
When Prime Minister Sunak was challenged at Westminster on how the NHS could be relieved of ever-growing pressures, he put anti-smoking policy at the centre of his reply.
“On smoking, the ‘swap to stop’ programme is trying something quite proactive … quite innovative”, Sunak said. “There is such persuasive evidence from that …if you can help existing adult smokers to switch away from smoking to using vapes -this is not about disposable vapes for children, which is obviously concerning … there are clearly public health benefits of acting before the bigger problems come down the line”.

Areas of Derbyshire with highest levels of preventable deaths revealed in new report
The areas of Derbyshire with the highest levels of preventable deaths have been disclosed in a new council report. This includes cancers, cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses which could have been prevented or avoided through either poor health choices, low-quality accommodation or because a health condition was either missed or caught too late.
Key causes of preventable deaths include alcohol, smoking and poor diets, with both often seen at higher levels in more deprived communities.
The data is displayed in a new report compiled by Derbyshire County Council, used to support a further new report into the connection between poor health and poor housing.
Middlecroft and Poolsbrook on the outskirts of Chesterfield is the ward with the most preventable deaths between 2016-2020, with 227 for every 100 deaths, a county council report details.
The council report says: “Mental wellbeing is critically important to quality of life and is protective against physical illness, social inequalities and unhealthy lifestyles. Our mental wellbeing enables us to get the most from life and feel connected to friends and family, fulfil our potential, contribute to communities and to adopt healthy lifestyles.

Angola drives innovation in communicating tobacco control
The smoking epidemic is one of the greatest public health threats the world has ever faced. Tobacco kills an estimated 8 million people yearly, with 1.2 million of those deaths being non-smokers exposed to second-hand smoke.
The World Health Organization (WHO) works with Member States to assist them in fulfilling their obligations under the terms of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
Among several initiatives, the Framework Convention recommends developing and implementing programs to promote tobacco prevention in schools, universities, healthcare facilities, workplaces, and sports environments.
In this context, WHO in Angola supported the National Institute for Drug Control (INALUD) in the production of a comic book education magazine, “Sonhos Límpidos,” a vital information vehicle to strengthen awareness, education, and sensitization on the benefits of healthy and tobacco-free lifestyles, as well as smoking prevention among children and young people.
The initiative falls within the scope of the Writing and Drawing in Schools project, carried out annually by INALUD in partnership with the Ministry of Education to mark World No Tobacco Day.
According to the Director of INALUD, Dr. Ana Graça, despite the prevention campaigns that have been carried out in the country, there is still a deficit in the education of young people to prevent smoking and other substances harmful to the population’s health.
