Today we commemorate the 101st birthday of civil rights icon Fred T. Korematsu and are reminded to always stand up for what is right. Fred Korematu's legacy for social justice has fundamentally changed our country and continues to be a beacon for social change to this day. Korematsu Day is also the first U.S. holiday named after an Asian American.
Fred Korematsu’s daughter, Karen Korematsu, shared her reflections and what it means to her to continue her father's legacy.
In our blog, we discuss why Fred Korematu's story and the stories of Japanese American incarceration during World War II still resonate. As we experience attacks on vulnerable communities today, including the xenophobic Muslim ban, it is more important than ever not to repeat the mistakes of the past.
We are marking the end of our fundraiser in partnership with the Fred T. Korematsu Institute, which began in December on the 75th anniversary of Korematsu v. United States. All donations will be shared equally between our two organizations. Thank you for all of your support this month. If you have not already contributed, please consider giving today as we work for a better future for all communities and continue Fred’s legacy.
