Climate disasters this year have already taken thousands of lives across the world, John.

Millions of people are under flood watches and warnings as Vermont and other parts of the Northeast are being inundated with catastrophic rainfall and flooding. They’re calling this a “1-In-1,000-year weather event” but we’re calling this for what it really is: the climate crisis.

At the same time, deadly heat waves have had a chokehold on our cities for weeks, and are causing states from Florida to Arizona to break or tie record temperatures. Dozens of lives have already been lost from this extreme heat and now workers with poor labor protections have to decide between a paycheck or risking heat stroke.

Three different headlines stitched together of Houston & Texas news on the different recent death from the record breaking heatwaves.

But we’re not going to forget who got us here… the fossil fuel industry. Workers are dying on the job, homes are filling up with water and entire towns are being destroyed while their CEOs make billions in profit. Fossil fuels are the largest contributor to the climate crisis, and I want to be crystal clear: these are fossil fuel floods, fossil fuel fires, and fossil fuel fatalities.

Scientists have made it clear that we need to stop digging up and burning fossil fuels if we are going to avoid the worst impacts of the climate crisis. That’s why we’re calling on President Biden to declare a climate emergency — help us put pressure on his administration by signing your name on our petition.

Declaring a climate emergency is more than just calling the climate crisis what it is. It’s our chance to create good paying jobs, make communities more resilient in the face of disasters and direct government resources to building clean energy as quickly as possible. The heat waves and floods we are seeing will only get worse if we don’t do something now. And we cannot stand for any more preventable deaths and human suffering.

If you’re ready to demand action from those in power, take 1 minute to sign our petition calling on Biden to declare a climate emergency.

In solidarity,

Deirdre
