Hi John,
We're all too aware of the constant drumbeat of gun violence across the country, including here in Indianapolis.
It's a genuine shame that all sides haven't been able to come together to find a common-sense solution to reduce gun violence in our streets and protect the freedoms of responsible gun owners.
Mayor Joe doesn't see these as excuses and impediments, but rather, an imperative to act. In fact, Indianapolis is making progress on gun safety. Last night, the Indianapolis City-County Council passed Proposals 149 and 156, proving we won't back down from taking bold steps to protect Indy residents from gun violence.
Approval of these common-sense gun safety measures includes banning semiautomatic assault weapons, increasing the purchasing age to 21, requiring handgun licenses and removing the concealed carry of firearms.
In addition to these measures, Mayor Joe fully supports establishing a gun-free zone policy. This would mean that private groups who have permits to hold events on leased-out public property can request the space to be "gun free." The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department would then work with organizers to enforce this policy.
With the passage of these proposals, Indianpolis is sending a clear message of where we stand on gun safety.
Mayor Joe knows that gun violence is a top concern. That's why he's tackling this issue boldly and head on. Support his re-election efforts today so he can see his public safety strategy through >>
Thank you,
