Friend,
At the end of its latest term, the Supreme Court decided several cases that gained national media attention, including one striking down affirmative action in college admissions. But it also ruled that a Colorado wedding website designer can deny service to gay couples,
a decision that will allow businesses to discriminate against the LGBTQ+ community.
Given this court’s recent history, the ruling was shocking, but not surprising.
As the first openly gay member of Congress from Illinois, Rep. Eric Sorensen is passionate about defending – and expanding – the rights of LGBTQ+ Americans. Eric understands that in the face of attacks by the Supreme Court, the LGBTQ+ community needs to be protected by federal law. That’s why he introduced the Equality Act alongside several of his colleagues, even before the Supreme Court ruling came down.
The Equality Act would explicitly outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, education, and more – and the court’s recent ruling shows this legislation is more vital than ever.
We need to show that the public is behind the Equality Act, so we’re asking you to add your name to the petition below. Will you show your support for LGBTQ+ rights?
Thank you,
Team Sorensen
