** 🧡 Words from a parent
------------------------------------------------------------

“My 13-year-old son came out to me today. His mother and I are supportive and so are the few friends he’s told, but I know that isn’t the case for everyone. I am so glad there are organizations like this ready to support our children when they are most vulnerable.”

—John

** 🎉 Congrats to Trevor's training team
------------------------------------------------------------

This month, The Trevor Project officially launched its largest-ever TrevorChat/TrevorText training class for digital trainees! We also more than doubled the number of classes offered per year, so that we can graduate even more volunteers to support LGBTQ young people.

** 🏛️ Big victory in Utah & more progress on protecting youth from conversion therapy
------------------------------------------------------------

2020 started strong with the fight to protect youth from the dangerous and discredited practice of conversion therapy. On January 21st, Utah became the 19th state to protect LGBTQ youth from conversion therapy ([link removed]) . And we have momentum: Virginia has had successful votes in both the state senate and assembly, and Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Oklahoma, and West Virginia have already filed similar bills for the 2020 legislative session!

** 🏥 The Trevor Project speaks out for trans youth against proposed medical care bans
------------------------------------------------------------

As more bills are proposed in states like SD, FL, and SC that can produce negative health outcomes for LGBTQ young people, especially transgender and non-binary youth, The Trevor Project has been actively working to counter misinformation with medical evidence. In particular, the South Dakota bill (HB 1057 ([link removed]) ) would criminalize medical care for any transgender patient under the age of 18, even when such care is deemed medically necessary and has the consent of the patient’s parents.

“This dangerous bill threatens responsible medical professionals with imprisonment for providing best-practice medical care to transgender youth. It cannot be allowed to become law. The research is clear: supporting transgender and non-binary youth in their identities has positive mental health outcomes and decreases suicide risk. Cutting off access to medically necessary care will cost lives.”

—Dr. Alexis Chavez, Medical Director for The Trevor Project
