John--
On Tuesday, January 28, Mark Heckler passed to the realm of cherished memories.
Mark was the co-founder with Chris Gargano of the Morris Plains Democratic Committee (MPDC), an effort that began in 2004. He served as its Chair for many years and ran for Morris Plains Council several times, each time breaking new ground. Because of his pioneering leadership and the efforts of those he gathered around him, we now have a Democratic Mayor and two Democratic Councilwomen in our Community of Caring.
Additionally, Mark was a member of the Morris Plains Board of Education and served as its President. Mark was instrumental in planning for and overseeing renovation of our schools in the early 2000s. Mark and his wife, Marilyn, have three grown sons. Mark served as a Boy Scout Leader for many years, and Marilyn has been a long-time supporter and member of MPDC.
After Mark retired recently, he learned that he had developed mesothelioma, probably as a consequence of serving on a destroyer during the Vietnam War.
We are heartbroken, but we hold our memories of Mark dear and are grateful for his many contributions to our community and his commitment to the values we share. We extend our love and support to Marilyn and their sons, Alan, Evan, and Timothy, and their families.
