China’s considerable supply chain dominance has become the topic of many bipartisan policy discussions throughout Washington, D.C., and beyond. While it certainly poses national security risks for the U.S. and our allies, there is also an important component to consider: the environment.

CRES is proud to advocate for commonsense policy solutions that lower global emissions and strengthen American competitiveness, including reducing our reliance on countries like China, whose economy is more than three times more carbon-intensive than that of the U.S. CRES Forum recently released a white paper ([link removed]) illustrating how the United States can—and should—utilize its trade policy to combat China’s neo-colonialism and leverage our carbon advantage.

The paper details why it is so critical we rethink our trade policy—to not only counter our reliance on China but to capitalize on American efforts to produce clean energy, manufacture goods, and reduce global emissions in the process. We have some of the highest environmental and labor standards in the world, and it should be the United States leading the world in resource development—not the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Additionally, we are hosting an event with Senator Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), who introduced the PROVE IT Act ([link removed]) last month, to further highlight what we can do to counter the CCP’s economic strategy and environmental impacts. WHAT CRES IS HEARING

CRES Forum released a white paper titled, “How a New Trade Regime Can Counter Chinese Supply Chain Dominance and Neo-Colonialism ([link removed]) ,” authored by CRES Forum Senior Policy Fellow George David Banks. The paper outlines how the United States can leverage trade policy to combat the Chinese Communist Party’s efforts to dominate global supply chains and reduce reliance on the Chinese economy, which is three times more carbon-intensive than the United States. CRES Forum hosted one of our flagship events: Cool Conservative Communicators Collaborating on Climate Change with CRES Forum (C6WC), which was created to educate communicators on the Hill about ways to craft an authentically conservative clean energy message. A Look Into the 2023 CRES and CEN Annual Congressional Fly-in ([link removed])
This June, CRES was proud to once again partner with the Conservative Energy Network (CEN) to bring state and local leaders to meet with Congressional representatives in Washington to advocate for commonsense legislation that increases American energy production, reduces global emissions, strengthens the U.S. economy, and lessens our dependence on foreign adversaries.

CRES Forum Hosts Permitting Reform Panel Discussion ([link removed])
Permitting reform has proven to be a hot topic throughout the 118th Congress. Provisions that address the duration of environmental review completed under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) were included in the Limit, Save, Grow Act and later, in the bipartisan budget deal passed late last month. While these changes are welcome, there are additional opportunities for improvement.

Lowering Emissions = American Jobs + Global Leadership ([link removed])
In June, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced $135 million in funding for 40 projects that will help the United States continue to reduce carbon emissions from our world-class industrial sector.
