The city of Laodicea was rich, luxurious, and boasted a comfortable lifestyle for its residents. Though it was a city known for its self-reliance, bankers, eye treatments, and garments, the risen Christ called the church in Laodicea “wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked” (Revelation 3:17b). In this last letter to the churches in Revelation, Christ called the church of Laodicea to put worldly things aside and become passionate again about living for the Kingdom.

On the outside, Laodicea was a prosperous, Christian city, but Christ’s letter to the church there contained a harsh rebuke. The church’s complacent and pleasure-seeking nature was not compatible with the nature of Christ.

Of the seven churches that received letters from Christ in Revelation, Laodicea most closely represented the modern-day church of the West. Though settled and complacent, there is still time to answer Christ’s knock at the door and dine with Him.

Current archaeological excavations show how massive the city of Laodicea was.
