Dear Friend,
Getting caught in the crossfire is only one of the dangers on the road for people like Nour who are fleeing violence in El Geneina, the capital of Sudan’s West Darfur state. They are among the more than 1.4 million people who have been forcibly displaced by the recent escalation of conflict in their country. In addition to gun violence, other eyewitness accounts have described mass killings, looting, and women fleeing with children.
Since the intense fighting began in April, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has worked with local authorities to provide medical and humanitarian aid where it is needed most. However, with no immediate end to the violence in sight, the massive need for care is quickly outpacing our ability to provide it.
Here is a snapshot of the impact we have already made in Sudan thanks to the generosity of MSF supporters like you.
Violence is not the only threat our patients in Sudan must contend with right now. Many people fleeing the conflict have settled in displacement camps throughout the country and around border cities in neighboring Chad and South Sudan. The conditions in these camps—overcrowding and lack of shelter, food, and clean drinking water—have created perfect environments for malnutrition and the spread of deadly diseases likemalaria.
With the onset of the rainy season and the annual hunger gap—in which food stores from the previous year are depleted before new crops are harvestable—we anticipate the need for care in these camps and throughout the region will only increase in the coming months. We cannot wait to prepare, Friend.
