A blockbuster report recently revealed that Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito has accepted gifts from right-wing megadonors with cases before the court—without disclosing the gifts or recusing himself from those cases.1 This comes after outrageous revelations that Justice Clarence Thomas has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in gifts from another conservative billionaire—also without any disclosure. It's time to face the stark reality: The ones we trust to protect justice and uphold the law have betrayed us. We can't just sit back and let the rich and powerful buy off our justice system.
Justice Alito has been enjoying luxurious vacations courtesy of right-wing megadonors who have brought cases before the court. Two outlandish examples are Alito's lavish trip to Alaska paid for by Paul Singer right before he brought cases before the court and the extravagant trip to Rome paid for by Notre Dame's Religious Liberty Initiative immediately after they successfully lobbied for the court to overturn Roe v. Wade last year.2 Now, once this evidence came to light, Alito has lashed out to defend himself. This is nothing but corruption, a betrayal of the public's trust, and a slap in the face to every hard-working American.
We’re not going to let them get away with it. We're fighting back and launching a powerful petition that demands that the Senate Democrats launch a full-blown investigation into Justice Alito's dirty deeds and, if the evidence supports it, to impeach him. We can't let our justice system become a playground for the highest bidder. It's time to make it crystal clear that our justice system is NOT for sale.

Justice Alito isn't the only one entangled in this web of corruption. Justice Thomas has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in gifts from right-wing megadonor Harlan Crow—who collects Nazi memorabilia and owns the home where Thomas's mother lives rent-free and who pays the private school tuition for Thomas's godchild.3 This isn't a coincidence; it's a systemic problem that's poisoning the highest court in our country.

Concerted right-wing efforts have caused a shift in the court to push it out of step with American voters on issues from bodily autonomy to gun safety to the curbing of corporate power and polluters. We've seen how Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump packed the court—and now how billionaires use the court to protect their wealth. It's no wonder public trust in the court is at a historic low.4 Ultimately, we need to expand the court in order to rebalance it and restore its integrity. And we need a clear, enforceable code of ethics. We may need to impeach one or several justices. But most immediately, Senate Democrats can lead high-profile investigations to dig deep into these matters and expose the corruption for all to see.
We understand that the road to justice might be long and challenging, but we've never been afraid to fight for what's right. We'll show them that our values and our determination can't be silenced. It's time to reclaim our justice system and ensure it serves every single American, no matter their background or bank account.
