In the final days of 2018, CDT put forth a discussion draft for a Federal Baseline Privacy Legislation, addressing the numerous challenges that drafting such legislation raises. The discussion draft set reasonable limits on the use, collection, and sharing of personal information and provides individual rights to access, correct, delete, and port data.
Since introducing the discussion draft, our team has been aggressively pursuing comprehensive federal privacy legislation. Michelle Richardson, Director of CDT's Privacy and Security project, has testified multiple times on the subject before Congress, most recently in December 2019.
In the coming year, we expect to see a single comprehensive privacy and security law put forth for a vote. We will continue to educate decision-makers on the details and implications of such legislation, and urge legislators at the federal level to take consumer privacy seriously, while also urging state governments to do the same.
We will continue to work with companies to review their products and policies and to recommend courses of action to make their products more privacy-focused. With each small change, we are helping companies take a large step forward for the millions of consumers they serve.
We can no longer ignore the issue of unregulated data collection and processing. The United States should be leading the way in protecting digital civil rights and personal privacy. CDT is helping it get there.
