Hi John,
I want to tell you a story about my childhood. One of my all-time favorite memories from when I was little was spending time after school with my Assyrian neighbor.
Her name was Nana, and she was like a grandmother to me. My brother and I would help her pick grape leaves in her backyard and make fresh, homemade dolmas.
And over plates of her delicious dolmas, she would tell us stories: about how Assyrians have made incredible contributions to global art and culture, how they were the first people to domesticate crops, and how they – quite literally! – invented the wheel.
She would also tell us about how Assyrians have sadly faced centuries of persecution, which caused many of them to come to the United States for a new future to pursue their own American dreams.
I think about Nana every time I work on immigration issues. I’ll never understand what it’s like to be an immigrant, but Nana’s stories drive me to action. Immigrants are our friends, our classmates and our neighbors. They have so much to teach us. And they are some of the most resilient people I know. It’s why the vilification of immigrants hurts me so much.
It’s not just Republican rhetoric that is infuriating - it’s also their blocking of common sense immigration reform. As I write this, over 10,000 Dreamers in my community are forced to live in the shadows because they don’t have a path to citizenship. Passing the DREAM Act is the least we can do to give them a future here. I was proud to cosponsor that bill, and I continue to push with all my heart to make it into law.
I do this work for Nana. For her family and the tens of thousands of families like hers.
Thanks for listening and sharing Nana’s story,
- Josh
