John,
Last month, the Supreme Court’s right-wing majority betrayed the 45 million Americans who relied on President Biden’s promise to forgive their student debt.
As we’ve seen time and again, we cannot count on SCOTUS to rule in the best interest of the American people. Resuming student loan payments in the middle of an affordability crisis will be absolutely crushing. We need to pursue policies that will allow hardworking Americans to realize their dreams, build wealth, and boost the economy.
President Biden proposed an alternative solution to ease student debt following the Supreme Court’s ruling. He is seeking to create a 12-month “on-ramp repayment program” to help those who cannot make payments avoid defaulting on their debts. He also plans to invoke the Higher Education Act of 1965 in an effort to enact debt forgiveness.
This new plan is a good start, but we can do more. President Biden must prevent interest on student debt from accruing, pause collections, and extend the moratorium until this debt can be forgiven. We need the Khanna Plan—and President Biden must follow it.
