John,
Here are some updates on what Congresswoman Cori Bush has been up to in Congress.
In the past few months:
Cori secured over $278 million for her congressional district, including:
-
Over $196 million to improve St. Louis’s regional public transportation infrastructure, including making railcars more accessible to more people and creating manufacturing jobs.
-
Over $82 million for disaster recovery, which is urgently needed as extreme weather events like flooding continue to impact residents of St. Louis city and county.
-
Communities are also now getting funding that Cori secured last year for this year’s federal budget. In addition to the $278 million from the past few months, Cori has delivered over $1 billion for her district, and late last year secured these funds for 2023:
-
Delivered over $18 million for community projects in Missouri’s First Congressional District that will create jobs, enhance public safety, deliver public health services, build new affordable housing units, and support youth.
-
Secured $214 million for public transportation systems affected by climate disasters across the country, including in the St. Louis region.
Cori advocated for environmental justice:
-
As the highest-ranking Democrat on the Subcommittee on Economic Growth, Energy Policy, and Regulatory Affairs, Cori spoke up during hearings in support of reducing polluting emissions from vehicles and regulating gas stoves to improve public health. We have a right to breathe clean air, including indoors.
Cori pushed back against right-wing extremists:
-
Cori and Rep. Barbara Lee introduced an amendment to remove the GOP’s expanded work requirements for people who rely on SNAP benefits, or food assistance, in the federal debt limit bill. Unfortunately, MAGA Republicans succeeded in their attempt to pair raising the country’s debt limit with policies that will harm our most vulnerable communities. Cori voted against the bill and called to eliminate the debt ceiling altogether so Republicans can’t use it again to take our economy hostage.
-
Cori called out Republican hypocrisy on public safety in a House Judiciary Committee hearing and voted no on a Republican bill on law enforcement during National Police Week. Instead, Cori has proposed community-based approaches to prevent violence and make people’s lives better, like the People’s Response Act.
Cori has introduced a number of bills expanding reproductive rights, including three in the last month:
-
The Protect Sexual and Reproductive Health Act would remove federal barriers to reproductive autonomy, and use a whole-of-government, interagency approach to provide comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care.
-
And the Abortion Justice Act would require insurance coverage to include abortion care, protect people from criminalization, and remove disparities and barriers to care based on race and immigration status.
Cori led on reparations for Black Americans:
Thank you for your support and partnership. Together, we will keep pushing for racial, economic, gender, and environmental justice.
In solidarity,
-Team Cori
