Historic Month for Species Conservation
Dear John,
Seeing a calf is always amazing, no matter what species it is or where in the world it happens. Witnessing the newborn of an endangered species swimming in the ocean with its mother is even more special, since it means that endangered species are procreating. Procreating means survival.
This exact scene played out during the 2023 Vaquita Survey, which studies a cetacean that by all accounts was projected to have vanished by now due to illegal fishing. Survey data shows up to 10-13 Vaquita existDr. Barbara Taylor, leader of the comprehensive evaluation, said “This survey revealed the greatest conservation success for vaquitas in my 30 years working to conserve this species,” and later in the report stated, “The apparent 90% decrease in gillnetting within the last stronghold of the Vaquitas is probably the most significant step taken to date to save this species.”
The decrease in illegal nets Dr. Taylor mentions was made possible by YOUR support of Sea Shepherd. See the entire report

The incredible news of the Survey reached around the world, with everyone from the New York Times to Leonardo DiCaprio celebrating Sea Shepherd’s effectiveness in protecting the Vaquita.

to help protect Cuvier’s Beaked Whales
The Martin Sheen Leaves Dry-Dock To Kick-off Operation Guadalupe
After completing Operation Revillagigedo, the iconic Martin Sheen recently completed repairs in San Diego to attend to general maintenance, including structural analysis of the hull, engine and generator maintenance, and replacement of mechanical parts. It then set sail for Operation Guadalupe, which started in 2016 and helps measure, preserve and protect Cuvier’s beaked whales in the waters surrounding Guadalupe Island off the coast of Mexico.

Direct Action Crew
It’s easy to get discouraged about our oceans and our planet, but its critical that each of us remembers that calf and the hope that it brings. We all can take a stand in defense of our ocean, and one way to do that is our monthly donor program, the Direct Action Crew. The DAC ensures that our ships have the resources they need to face down poachers, push back against species devastation, and defend the line between survival and extinction for some of the most vulnerable animals on the planet.
The success of every campaign requires teamwork. Through the collaboration of our captains, crew, onshore volunteers, and supporters like you, Sea Shepherd protects marine wildlife worldwide, and protects that calf.
