Hi John,
Long before COVID-19 highlighted the shortfalls of the long-term care system in the United States, nursing home workers across the country have been fighting for a staffing standard. Decades of understaffing have spread workers thin, putting our nation's 1.2 million nursing home residents at risk. At some facilities, nursing home workers are forced to care for 20, 30 or even 40 residents at a time.
A federal mandate for a strong national staffing standard in nursing homes is long overdue. Now, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is gearing up to release a proposed rule that would establish the first federal staffing standard for nursing homes. This standard will lay the foundation for improving care and care jobs, as well as holding nursing home corporations accountable for actions—or inactions—that prioritize profits over people.
We're holding a virtual rally on July 13 at 2 p.m. ET to let CMS know that a strong federal staffing standard is the only way to end the long-term care crisis in our country. Will you join us?
