NEWS FROM POWER TO DECIDE

Abortion Access One Year Later

Although Roe v. Wade was never enough to protect abortion rights for far too many people, its repeal was a historic loss for our country. By eliminating Roe’s protections, the Supreme Court rolled back generations of reproductive rights and jeopardized the reproductive health of generations to come. Read Dr. Raegan McDonald-Mosely, Power to Decide’s CEO, thoughts on the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health.

Confusion About the Legality of Birth Control

There is considerable confusion about the legality of birth control in Missouri and many are worried about future access, according to a new survey of state residents.

One in four (25%) Missourians do not believe or do not know that birth control pills — the most used form of contraception in the US — are legal in the state.

More than half (53%) do not believe or do not know that emergency contraception is legal.

In addition, fully half of survey respondents (50%) — including 44% of Republicans, 48% of Independents, and 66% of Democrats — are concerned that elected officials in Missouri will enact laws that restrict people from getting the birth control method they want.

The survey of 1,000 Missouri residents was conducted as part of the Missouri-based The Right Time initiative. Through this effort, health centers across the state are improving access to contraception by providing free or low-cost birth control.

A Bundle of Health Care

Power to Decide’s One Key Question® (OKQ) interactive training opens the door to a conversation with patients about if, when, and under what circumstances they want to get pregnant and have a child. Our Preconception and Contraception Pathways to Care online training takes that conversation one step further by teaching providers how to offer preconception and contraception counseling and care in a personalized, non-judgmental, and unbiased way.

Both OKQ and Pathways to Care are available as stand-alone trainings. A discounted training bundle is available for those interested in taking the OKQ and Pathways training together. Simply visit our online shop to begin your training.

What's Your Birth Control Story?

We want to hear your birth control story—and help amplify it. Tell us why you love your method, your journey to find the method that’s right for you, or your struggles to access birth control. Your story can help others feel less alone, change a policymaker’s mind about legislation, and help shift public opinion.

Dr. Raegan Speaks at NFPRHA 2023

In June, Dr. Raegan presented at The National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association’s 2023 National Conference. She sat on The Racist History of Family Planning plenary as one of four experts speaking about the historical and present-day impacts of racism in family planning. To learn more, read Dr. Raegan’s thoughts on the racist roots of abortion restrictions in this blog from last year.

POLICY UPDATES

Appropriations Committees Begin to Consider Spending Bills

In June, Congress finalized a deal to raise the debt limit and shortly thereafter the House and Senate Appropriations Committees returned to marking up (considering) spending bills. Although neither the House nor Senate Appropriations Committee Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (LHHS)—which has jurisdiction over the Title X Family Planning and the Teen Pregnancy Prevention (TPP) programs—has announced a markup, now is the time to contact Congress. Your voice is needed to urge Congress to increase funding for these programs, which give young people the tools they need to live healthy lives and achieve their goals. Please contact your members of Congress today.

Congressional Champions Introduce Bills to Protect and Expand Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health

In the lead up to the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs, Congressional champions have introduced a slate of bills to try to ameliorate the chaos created by the overturning of Roe. This includes the following bills, in addition to those that were already introduced earlier in the year.
Also, 211 members of Congress signed a discharge petition in an effort to force a vote on the Women's Health Protection Act.

In addition, our CEO, Raegan McDonald-Mosley joined a panel moderated by MSNBC’s Ali Vitali also featuring Senators Shaheen and Murray, Army Veteran Mia Leigh Renna, Texas resident Amanda Zurawski, and Texas physician Dr. Bhavik Kumar to discuss the impact of the Dobbs decisions on abortion. The segment aired on Morning Joe and throughout the day on MSNBC.
