Hi John,

On Saturday 23 September we’ll be joining with activists across the UK for a nationwide day of action to Make Polluters Pay.

The greed of oil giants and other corporate polluters is driving climate chaos. Some of the worst offenders are British companies like Shell and BP. We're calling on the government to make them pay for the loss and damage they are causing.

The Make Polluters Pay coalition is a movement of UK organisations standing together to demand that the UK government pays into a climate loss and damage fund for countries in the global south. Taxing corporate polluters’ obscene profits is the most just way to fund this.

This day of action will be a great opportunity to collaborate with other groups in your local area, as we all stand together to make polluters pay.

The coalition is planning an online creative brainstorm at 7pm on 31 July, where groups can plan their local actions and share inspiration. You can sign up to join here.

Why should we make polluters pay?

Climate change is already costing lives, especially in the global south. But we’re part of a powerful movement that’s led by the most impacted communities, who are driving real change.

Last year, Shell and BP made record profits from activities that are destroying the planet. Their CEOs are sitting on millions, whilst people around the world struggle to pay the bills, and lose their homes and livelihoods to the climate disaster.

Meanwhile our research shows that Shell could owe $1.5 trillion in climate reparations to the global south. This would pay for the loss of life, and damage to property, culture and so much more that the activities of Shell, BP and other oil giants have caused.

Communities in the global south are fighting back and demanding climate reparations to help build a fairer and more sustainable future. We must stand in solidarity with them and demand that our governments make polluters pay.

The UK built its wealth on extractive colonialism and controlling economies in the global south. As one of the biggest historical emitters in the world, we have a duty to countries already experiencing loss and damage due to climate disaster.

There’s already a windfall tax in place, but guess what? It includes a loophole that gives oil companies tax breaks if they invest in new oil and gas projects.

That’s right. As billions around the world grapple with climate chaos, this government is rewarding polluters for their destructive activities.

With this government failing on climate, and Labour promising to tighten up the windfall tax if they take power at the next general election, we need to make our voices heard as loudly as possible. Polluters need to pay for climate loss and damage in the global south, and we can help make that happen.

We’ll be sending loads more details about what’s happening and how you can get involved over the next few months. But if you have ideas in the meantime, we’d love to hear from you! Email [email protected] to talk plans through, or get resources and support from our activism team.

See you on the streets!
