In 1913, a visionary attorney named Sigmund Livingston saw a need to fight back against the antisemitism, bigotry and discrimination that were running rampant throughout society. With $200 and some empty desks in his office, ADL was born.
Today, ADL celebrates 110 years of leading the fight against antisemitism, intolerance and hate, building a more just and hopeful future for all. You and supporters just like you have been there every step of the way, as a force for change to help shield our communities against antisemitism and hate. But there is still more work to be done.

- In the 1920s, we exposed extremism, countering Ku Klux Klan-inspired violence against Jewish-owned business and religious institutions.
- In the 1940s, we launched massive research operations to uncover Nazi supporters and hate groups in the U.S., providing our findings to government agencies in Washington, D.C. and to the press.
- In the 1980s, ADL began publishing what became an annual Audit of Antisemitic Incidents, which still serves as a nationally recognized benchmark tool to track trends in domestic vandalism, harassment and violence directed against Jews and Jewish institutions.
Flash forward to today as ADL continues its legacy as the leading anti-hate organization in the world. Just weeks ago the White House rolled out a new strategy that ADL played a vital role in shaping — the first-ever U.S. National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism.
