| Identifying a Few Southeast Texas Fossils |
Fun fact about me – I love fossils!
However, identifying them isn’t always easy. Recently, I brought a few Southeast Texas fossils back with me to DC and visited the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History to get some help identifying them by Dr. Daryl Domning and his colleagues (pictured below).
Certainly a fascinating place to spend a few hours in! I appreciated Dr. Domning and his fellow paleontologists’ service and knowledge.
The fossils weren’t from the species we thought and hoped they would be, but interestingly, they turned out to be from an extinct elephant species called the American mastodon, which died out about 12,000 years ago.
