Dear John,

For-profit developers are dropping a “bomb” on California. This “Nuclear Option” is called the “builders remedy” – and it’s a provision in state housing law that allows developers to build residential towers right next door to single family homes. As pointed out in a recent Mercury News article, because of recent mandates passed down from Sacramento, the “builders remedy” is being used more and more by developers who are looking to force through massive projects in communities all over California.

This “nuclear option” allows for-profit developers to push these projects through without having to contribute a dime in additional taxes or fees to build the necessary infrastructure that the increased population growth will require – and without having to get virtually any buy in from local elected officials or the broader community.

But we are fighting back. We all know we need more housing – but that shouldn’t have to come with a dramatically higher tax bill, new traffic congestion, and the destruction of our single-family neighborhoods. If you agree, join us and help us fight to restore our right to have a say in the future of our communities.

For more than a year, the Our Neighborhood Voices team has been hard at work organizing more than 50,000 Californians who believe that land use decisions should be in the hands of neighbors and their local elected leaders – not developers looking to make a profit.

Dozens of these “builders remedy” projects have already popped up around the Bay Area – and there is likely even more throughout the state. That means there has never been a more important time for us to band together and tell Sacramento that we deserve to have a say in the future of our communities.
