Intercept investigative journalist Glenn Greenwald has been falsely charged with crimes in Brazil related to his reporting on corruption. Join us in defending freedom of the press by condemning the Brazilian government for this assault on a fundamental right!

<[link removed]>Dear John,

Glenn Greenwald, an investigative journalist at The Intercept, was charged with “cybercrimes” in Brazil for reporting the truth about prosecutorial misconduct and corruption. CODEPINK is proud to join Glenn, numerous press freedom and civil liberties organizations, as well as members of the international community in condemning this shameless attack on the press by the Brazilian government of President Jair Bolsonaro.

The more people denounce this assault on a fundamental freedom, the more likely it becomes that President Bolsonaro will finally understand that his attacks on the media — not to mention his attacks on indigenous peoples, women, the LGBTQ community, Afro-Brazilians and others — have gone too far.

Join us by signing this petition demanding that the Brazilian government take their hands off Glenn Greenwald! <[link removed]>

The charges against Glenn represent a straightforward attempt to intimidate and retaliate against him and The Intercept for their critical reporting that appeared to show a judge advising federal prosecutors how to prosecute cases he was presiding over in “Operation Car Wash”, a wide-ranging investigation into corruption that unjustly resulted in the impeachment of previous president Dilma Rousseff and the imprisonment of former president Lula da Silva. Further, by charging Greenwald with a cybercrime, the government has essentially criminalized engaging in legitimate journalistic practices, which threatens to have a chilling effect on journalists and sources alike.

While it might seem that a petition denouncing a foreign government is just symbolic — it isn’t. International pressure could compel President Bolsonaro to drop the charges. Furthermore, we know that President Bolsonaro likes to borrow from President Trump’s playbook and vice versa, so we need to be active in our defense of journalists before President Trump gets similar ideas.

Stand up for journalists worldwide by adding your name to the petition to defend Glenn Greenwald. <[link removed]> #HandsOffGreenwald
